Can beginners do Ashtanga Yoga?

You might be wondering, "Can a beginner do Ashtanga Yoga?" My answer is absolutely! As a seasoned yoga teacher with a decade of experience, I'm here to guide you on your journey to discovering the transformative power of Ashtanga yoga, and share some of the most important things to keep in mind to make this process of getting started easier for you.

Ashtanga Yoga - A Practice for All: Ashtanga Yoga is often associated with its vigorous sequences and physically demanding postures. While it's true that Ashtanga can be challenging, it's essential to understand that this practice is not exclusive to advanced yogis. In fact, the way it is traditionally taught and practiced can be a perfect fit for beginners just starting their yoga journey.

The Beginner's Mindset: A beginner's mindset is a gift in the world of yoga. It's about embracing the journey, being open to learning, and focusing your attention. Starting something new can be a humbling experience, and it's vital to remember that yoga is not about perfection. Your practice is about being present, trying your best, and showing up on the mat, no matter where you are in your journey.

Overcoming Perfectionism: One common misconception is that Ashtanga yoga is only for those who can perform advanced poses flawlessly. This couldn't be further from the truth. Perfectionism should not hold you back from beginning your practice. Yoga is about progress, not perfection. It's a journey of self-discovery, growth, and self-acceptance. So, let go of the idea that you need to be perfect and embrace the beauty of your unique yoga path. You also aren’t expected to just know the poses, sequence, and what do do - we all start at one point as beginners.

Adaptations and Variations: For beginners and even experienced students, Ashtanga Yoga can be adapted to suit your needs. If a pose feels challenging, take breaks or ask your teacher for variations that align with your current level and your needs. Your practice is unique to you, and there's no rush to learn it all or feel like you have mastered every pose. Remember that there's room for everyone in Ashtanga Yoga, regardless of your experience level and it’s all about finding your version of the practice.

The Importance of a Supportive Teacher: As a beginner, having a compassionate and supportive teacher is invaluable. They can guide you, provide adjustments, and create an environment where you feel encouraged to explore your practice. It’s important to also find someone that you connect with, there is a teacher for every student and don’t be afraid to explore your options. If you're just starting your journey, consider joining me for a class. I'm here to support and nurture your growth in Ashtanga yoga.

I offer two weekly opportunities for beginners to start their Ashtanga Yoga journey:

  1. Thursdays: Half Primary Series (7-8:15 pm EST) - A guided class where you'll explore the fundamentals of Ashtanga yoga, and get a feel for the sequence. It’s ok to take breaks in this class.

  2. Saturdays: Go at Your Pace Mysore Style Class (10-12 pm EST) - A class tailored to your individual needs, allowing you to progress at your own speed. Don’t be afraid of the 2 hour time slot, there is more flexibility here where most students stay about 75 minutes - 90 minutes, and you can start anywhere between 10-11am EST. This allows more time for communication and workshopping your practice together. It’s like a small community private.

Or, if you're seeking a more personalized experience, you can book a free consultation call today. We can discuss your goals and how Ashtanga Yoga can benefit you on your path to wellness and self-discovery. One of my favorite ways to support beginners is with an introductory pack of classes where we can create a plan together to get you ready and confident for a group class.

Starting Your Yoga Practice - As you embark on your yoga journey, remember these key points:

  1. You Are Welcome Just as You Are: The yoga community is inclusive, and everyone started as a beginner. No one is judging you, and experienced yogis are cheering you on.

  2. Seek Support: Don't hesitate to ask questions, request modifications and other options, or share your concerns with your teacher. They are there to support you!

  3. Embrace the Journey: Your Ashtanga yoga practice is a personal voyage. It's about progress, not perfection. Enjoy the ride, and be kind to yourself.

Hi, I’m Lauren Reek. I’m a Yoga and Meditation Teacher, and Holistic Wellness Coach located on Long Island. I have dedicated my life to helping people navigate the ups and downs of life and create a toolbox of tools they can continue to go back to when things don’t go as planned.

My mission is to be a supportive guide and resource for others on their journey towards total wellness and personal development, and embarking or currently on the path of yoga. I want to make feeling good accessible, informative, and fun.

My approach to yoga is a holistic and adaptive one, inspired by the lineage of Ashtanga Yoga (eight limb path of yoga) and yoga therapy, where I help make the poses fit to you and find your version of the practice rather than fitting you into a pose. Using the time on the mat and in sessions to practice skills and techniques that you can bring off of the mat and into the world.
